Advocating for Conservation in Court

In the Nairobi Environment and Land Court, a significant case unfolds—one that resonates deeply with Aberdare Yetu’s mission to preserve the Aberdare Mountains’ ecological integrity. Four petitioners, supported by renowned environmental organizations, have filed a lawsuit to halt the construction of a 52km tarmac road through Aberdare National Park and Forest.

The petitioners’ arguments rest on solid factual ground, emphasizing the critical role the Aberdares play in Kenya’s ecosystem and economy. As one of the nation’s primary ‘water towers,’ these mountains serve as a crucial catchment area for dams supplying water to Nairobi City and various rivers, sustaining millions of lives and livelihoods.

Furthermore, the Aberdares provide a range of ecosystem services estimated at KES 630 billion, including water regulation, carbon sequestration, and biodiversity support. The proposed road’s potential impact on Aberdare’s biodiversity, including rare species and a significant elephant population, underscores the need for careful consideration.

The petitioners advocate for an alternative route, the 33km Kariamu-Ndunyu Njeru route, which offers reduced environmental impact and aligns with legal obligations to protect threatened species. They argue that the proposed road fails to demonstrate significant socio-economic benefits and overlooks less intrusive alternatives.

Aberdare Yetu supports the petitioners’ efforts to safeguard the Aberdares’ ecological heritage. We believe that a balanced approach is essential, one that prioritizes conservation while addressing infrastructure needs. Our goal is to ensure that any development respects the delicate balance of nature and secures the Aberdares’ future for generations to come.

In the courtroom, we stand as a voice for conservation, advocating for the preservation of Kenya’s natural treasures. We urge the court to consider the facts presented and make a decision that upholds the principles of sustainable development and environmental stewardship.

Together, let us protect Aberdare Yetu – Our Aberdare, Our Responsibility.
